STI Testing

To maintain good sexual health, it is important to get tested regularly.

STI testing can be done at most healthcare centres such as sexual health clinics, general practice surgery and hospitals.

It is also possible to get a self-testing kit which can be done at home. You can get a self-test kit at a pharmacy or they can also be ordered online.

You should get tested every 3-6 months if you do not have a regular sexual partner.

It is also vital that you get tested as soon as possible if you have any symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection.

STI testing may involve:

  • Urine testing

  • Blood testing

  • Swabs taken from the genital area

If you test positive for an STI, you should contact any recent sexual partners as they may also have contracted that infection. This includes any individual with whom you have had sexual intercourse within 6 months.

You should also avoid sexual intercourse until you have completed the treatment for the STI. However, if you do have sex, you should advise your partner to wear a condom.
